audience effects theory

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

A passive audience close passive audience, an audience which accepts the messages encoded in a media text without challenge. is more likely to accept the messages encoded in a media text without challenge and are therefore more likely to be directly affected by the messages.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

An active audience engages, interprets and responds to a media text in different ways and is capable of challenging the ideas encoded in it.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

The Hypodermic needle theory is a linear communication theory that suggests that media messages are injected directly into the brains of passive audiences. In this theory the media is seen as powerful and able to 'inject' ideas into an audience who are seen as weak and passive and could be influenced by a message.

4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:

Entertainment – Viewers watch programmes for enjoyment. Personal Identity - Viewers can recognise a person or product, role models that reflect similar values to themselves and mimic or copy some of their characteristics.

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: Media text - The Times newspaper

 > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY:
 > Why:
he content we expose ourselves to on the media changes the way we think about ourselves and others. Young people are highly affected by the values embraced by media. In effect, media offers numerous interpretations of what is beautiful, sexy, attractive, and appropriate. like media content in London that only Londoners can go to.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT:
 > Why:
People may immerse themselves in particular types of media to make up for the lack of satisfaction at work or their daily lives.  E.g. women may compensate for the lack of romance in their marriages by reading romantic novels.
RELATIONSHIPS:
 > Why:
This can lead to unrealistic relationship expectations as individuals compare their experiences to the carefully crafted images and narratives they see online. Moreover, the prevalence of edited images can contribute to body image issues and self-esteem struggles.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

The clip blue planet may be entertaining for some people as they might find it quite relaxing and calming. also people may be interested in animals and nature so might watch it because of that. you could also learn about wildlife and oceans and fishes sharks etc and learn about the documentary. watching the clip is also a chance to see something you may not usually see.
